For over a decade Hilton has been a pioneer in moving towards environmental sustainability. We take our environmental responsibility seriously and are firmly committed to improving our performance. Our mission is to ultimately become the industry leader in environmental management.

Through our programme, Hilton in Europe has established a clear environmental policy which involves all team members. It focuses on four key environmental issues:
The idea developed within Europe & Africa executive team towards the end of 2005. A need was felt to focus more on containing escalating energy bills. At the same time, an environmental cultural initiative needed to be developed. It was decided to develop a programme that would involve all Team Members at all levels.

The programme needed to educate Team Members and make them more aware of environmental issues and how to relate to them personally.

The programme was launched on 1st January 2006 by a "green box" sent to all hotels containing:

Instructions on how to create an environmental workshop
A powerpoint presentation explaining the four focus areas
Collateral to use during the workshops
Materials to be used in guest room
An introductory video interview with Wolfgang Neumann

In 2008 a second GreenBox was sent out to all hotels with an updated programme information and training pack.
A third GreenBox has been distributed among the hotels in the UK & Ireland in 2009.

The five pillars of the we care! programme are:

Environmental Policy
ITP Guidelines for Sustainable Siting, Design & Construction
ecoLearning
HEAT (Hilton Environmental Analysis & Tracking)
formerly known as HER (Hilton Environmental Reporting)
OnQ Insider (intranet) as a communication tool

An overall target was set:

2006: reduce energy consumption by 5% compared to 2005
2007: reduce energy and water consumption by 10% compared to 2005
2008: target chemicals, reduce energy
consumption by 15% compared to 2005, and
water consumption by 10% compared to 2005
2009: target waste, chemicals, and reduce energy
& water (to comply with the Hilton Family Sustainability
goals)
